(Note: I had the good fortune to speak about my career as an attorney at this special high school.
Not only was it a chance for students to learn about being a lawyer, but a chance to dispel myths about the responsibilities of an attorney, their daily work, and what it takes to become an attorney.
Most times, people have the misconception that an attorney’s sole goal is litigation. In addition, others feel that if you do not “fight” for their interests, you’ve let them down.
I have spent the better part of twelve years trying to explain to clients both the strengths (and weaknesses) of their cases. Most are willing to listen. However, there are those who seem to turn down good advice. I hope that I was able to impart some wisdom upon these students that will guide them to a brighter future compared to others who may have steered them down a bad path.
Though all the sessions were great, the students above were a special group. It was a frank discussion on their experiences with the law, their fears of college, and challenges of being an attorney of color.
I wish them all the best as they were given a second chance to pursue their education.
